The local economy
Valais combines activities that few cantons bring together. Industry, notably chemicals, life sciences and metallurgy, is established along the Rhône axis, from the Chablais to the Upper Valais. Hydropower shapes both the territory and public finances: dams, concessions and production weigh on the investment decisions of many players. Mountain tourism, in winter and in summer, sustains resorts, hotels and a wider network of seasonal shops and services.
